Driving With A Sleep Disorder

Sleeping_Beauty.jpg

An average of 1.3 million people die in the US every year as the result of a car accident, and fatigued driving is responsible for a lot of accidents.  People living with untreated sleep apnea or other sleep disorder may not realize how much it impacts their alertness and how dangerous it is to drive.  Dr. Nick Mobilia and the staff of Elite Dental Arts can help you find relief from sleep apnea, so please schedule a visit for evaluation.

Patients who don’t seek treatment for their poor sleep may think they are used to feeling tired all the time and are unimpaired.  However a chronic lack of restful sleep is shown to have the same effects has being intoxicated by drugs or alcohol.  Excessive sleepiness causes problems with focus and attention, which you need in order to drive.  The lack of focusing and inability to react quickly makes high-risk drivers. If you are planning to drive somewhere but feel sleepy, take a minute to assess your alertness.  A short nap can even revive you for a 30 minute drive.  Caffeine is of course a temporary fix, but it can keep you alert and prevent falling asleep at the wheel.  If you ever notice yourself dozing at the wheel, pull over to rest.

Don’t live with a sleep disorder any longer.  Visit www.elitedentalarts.com for more information. To schedule an appointment with Dr. Nick Mobilia at Elite Dental Arts in New York, NY, call 212-681-0939.

Smoking with Sleep Apnea

Smoking_Affects_Teeth.jpg

Smoking will exacerbate any respiratory condition.  It is proven to cause snoring and lead to obstructive sleep apnea.  Patients struggling with sleep apnea should visit Elite Dental Arts for evaluation. We can help patients find relief from sleep apnea, but quitting smoking is up to you!  Smoking causes upper airway inflammation, meaning the swelling causes the airway to narrow and disrupts the nasal passage and throat.  This causes snoring and obstructive sleep apnea.  Cigarettes are highly addictive, and some smokers seek treatment for sleep apnea but continue to smoke. Smoking with sleep apnea not only puts more stress on the heart every day, but negates any treatment a sleep apnea patient is undergoing.

Habitual smokers may feel relaxed by one last cigarette for the day, but it actually creates more complications for restful sleep. Smokers can experience nicotine withdrawal overnight, causing more waking up and restlessness.  Quitting smoking cold turkey is very difficult, but even lessening the amount of cigarettes or avoiding smoking at nighttime can help you achieve more restful sleep.  Most smokers cannot quit on their own or on their first attempt, so don’t get discouraged!

Sleep Apnea and Alcohol

People suffering from obstructive sleep apnea (OAS) will find compassionate, expert care at Elite Dental Arts in Midtown. Our oral appliances will help protect patients from night time teeth grinding while keeping their airways open. But because we focus on prevention, we want our patients to know they can reduce their risk of OAS by avoiding alcohol before bed.

OAS is caused by the sagging of throat tissue into the airway. It results in teeth grinding (bruxism) because people subconsciously try to move their jaws and reopen their airways while asleep. Alcohol is a muscle relaxant. It creates a risk of throat obstruction even in people who do not get sleep apnea normally. Consequently, they may be taken out of deep sleep several times in a night. But they may also have a more difficult time waking up if they stop breathing, which could cause the amount of oxygen in their blood to get dangerously low.

People may not realize if they have sleep apnea, but they can get tested for it in a sleep clinic. We can assist sleep apnea patients by providing them with custom-fitted oral appliances to keep their upper and lower teeth apart at night, but avoiding muscle relaxants will let the oral appliances do their jobs more easily.

Oral Appliances For Sleep Apnea

Snoring_girl.jpg

Patients suffering from sleep apnea should visit Dr. Nick Mobilia at Elite Dental Arts to see if a COAT device is the solution to your sleep woes.  The most common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine.  These work by forcefully pumping oxygen into the patient’s mask and up the nose.   CPAP machines are effective, but some patients find the mask uncomfortable or overwhelming.  Continuous open airway therapy (COAT) devices work by aligning the jaw stabilizing the mouth to preserve the openness of the airway.  This helps get maximum oxygen flow without a machine.

We are happy to be able to provide our patients with custom oral appliances.  These devices vary in size and design, but each style is meant to stabilize the jaw and control the tongue to keep the airway open.  A consultation is the only way to find out which type of device is the best fit for you.  If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about COAT devices and all the services we offer, visit www.elitedentalarts.com for more information. Sleep Apnea And The Heart

Sleeping_Beauty.jpg

Sleep apnea is not only a serious medical condition, but left untreated it can lead to a plethora of other health issues and is dangerous for the heart.  A patient with sleep apnea does not breathe properly during sleep, resulting in low oxygen levels throughout the entire body. Breathing supplies lungs with oxygen but also the rest of the body.  When there is a lack of oxygen, the part of the heart responsible for moving oxygenated blood to the organs and extremities is forced to work extra hard.  This can cause an enlarged heart and eventually heart failure.

Those living with untreated sleep apnea are at a higher risk of developing irregular heartbeats, and also have a higher risk for a stroke and heart attack.  Men with untreated sleep apnea are actually living with double the risk for a stroke.  If you have yet to find a solution for sleep apnea, please visit Elite Dental Arts for a consultation.

Dangers of Frequent Snoring

Snoring_girl.jpg

Some people may snore after a long, exhausting day of strenuous activities, while others may snore due to an underlying medical condition. Snoring occurs because the air flow in the mouth is physically obstructed. Obstruction can be caused by several reasons, such as poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue, obstructed nasal airways from a deviated septum, or bulky throat tissue due to obesity. Regardless of what’s causing you or your partner to snore, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts has a solution.

People who snore on a frequent basis run several health risks, including sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is dangerous for many reasons because sleep apnea causes a person to pause and stop breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea increases a person’s risk of a heart attack and is also the leading cause of automobile accidents, due to falling asleep at the wheel. If you experience symptoms of constant fatigue, falling asleep during normal waking hours, or if your partner is pestering you, discuss your treatment options, today.

Sleep Apnea and Diabetes

Elite Dental Arts in Midtown provides patients with treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This disorder is extremely disruptive to a patient’s mental health and overall functioning and it particularly impacts people with diabetes.

OSA is the result of a person’s throat tissues sagging into their airways. This causes the person to wake up or be taken out of deep sleep several times in a night. People who are overweight are at greater risk for OSA. Metabolic disorders such as diabetes make people more likely to be overweight, but there is some evidence that OSA worsens diabetes symptoms, too. When sleep is disrupted, the liver produces more glucose, which can cause blood sugar to spike.

Where does the dentist come in? At Elite Dental Arts, we provide oral appliances that help keep the wearer’s jaw in place at night. This reduces the likelihood of their soft tissues obstructing their airways, sparing them the effects of sleep apnea. It also prevents them from grinding their teeth at night, which eliminates a source of stress which further disrupts their sleep.

Dangers of Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is a serious sleep disorder that occurs when your breathing is interrupted during sleep. If you have sleep apnea, you may not even be aware that you do. If you wake up in the morning and feel fatigued, or your partner is kicking you in the middle of the night because you are snoring too loud, it might be time to schedule a consultation with Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts to discuss your treatment options.

The most common type of sleep apnea is obstructive sleep apnea. This happens, when the airway is blocked, causing pauses in breathing and loud snoring. Sleep apnea is dangerous because it causes lack of sleep, and lack of sleep can lead to daytime sleepiness, slow reflexes, poor concentration, and even an increased risk of automobile accidents. Sleep apnea can additionally cause diabetes, heart disease, and liver problems. Because the most prominent sleep apnea symptoms occur when you’re asleep, it’s important to listen to your significant other if he or she is suggesting treatment.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea can develop if the tongue or other muscles in the back of the throat become floppy and collapse. When the muscles relax or collapse it can cause an airway obstruction. That obstruction or blockage causes a cessation of breathing, known as apnea. People with obstructive sleep apnea may have many incidents of apnea an hour.

Sleep apnea can have several effects on overall health. Not only can it lead to poor sleep, but it can also cause headaches.  Sleep apnea can also increase your risk of high blood pressure, which may lead to heart disease. At Elite Dental Arts, we offer solutions for patients who suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.

We offer oral appliance therapy, which involves two different types of oral devices. Either type of device is custom made and worn while you sleep. One device is considered a tongue retaining device. It is worn in order to prevent the tongue from collapsing onto the back of the throat. The second oral appliance is called a mandibular advancement device. It works by pushing the jaw forward slightly, which keeps the airway open. Dental appliances for sleep apnea are usually covered by MEDICAL INSURANCE, which means no out of pocket expenses for you unless you have a deductible. At the end of the year, most deductibles have been usually satisfied.

For more information on oral appliance therapy or any other dental need, please call Elite Dental Arts at (212) 681-0939 or you may conveniently schedule online.  Please share your thoughts and comments below.

Sleep Medicine and Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a very serious condition that, if left untreated, can amount to a number of health risks and complications that concern your overall health. For the sake of your wellness and longevity, it’s important to pay attention to any possible signs of sleep apnea and seek a diagnosis and treatment.

As part of the many capabilities here at Elite Dental Arts, dental sleep medicine services are available to those patients with obstructive sleep apnea—specifically those who cannot tolerate or adjust to CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) treatment. By prescribing nightly therapy with a sleep apnea oral appliance, many Elite Dental Arts sleep medicine patients have successfully taken control over the harmful effects of obstructive sleep apnea.

A diagnosis is the first step towards getting treatment, but many people affected by obstructive apnea aren’t even aware they have it. We want to make that crucial diagnosis all the more convenient to obtain.  We are now offering a take-home sleep apnea test provided through HomeSleep, LLC. With this test process, you’ll be able to obtain a thorough diagnosis from a certified Sleep MD.  The simple, though effective, test is convenient and comfortable, while serving as reliable means of determining whether or not dental sleep medicine can help you.

If you’re ready to get started with this innovative diagnostic process and subsequent treatment, or you have questions on obstructive sleep apnea, its signs, symptoms, risks and how we can help, give our office a call.
