TMJ/TMD

The temporomandibular joint connects the jaw bone to the skull at the temporal bone. It controls your jaw and mouth, allowing you to perform everyday functions like chewing and speaking. If you suffer from pain or aches in your jaw, either during movement or after, you might have a temporomandibular disorder or TMD. Elite Dental Arts, located in New York, NY., offers treatment for TMD with Dr. Nick M. Mobilia, D.D.S.

Common symptoms of TMD are pain in the jaw area, ear pain, headaches or neck aches, clicking or popping sound when the jaw moves, jaw getting stuck open, problems eating certain foods, and teeth grinding (bruxism). Teeth grinding is one of the more serious symptoms of TMD. When you grind your teeth, the bottom and top rows scrape against each other. Eventually, this continual movement will wear away the enamel. With the enamel gone, the dentin is exposed. This can cause sensitivity in the teeth and open up the mouth to bacterial infections.

The most common treatment for TMD is for Dr. Mobilia to prescribe you a night guard. A night guard is a clear insertable device that goes in your mouth and over your top teeth. It essentially acts as a barrier between your teeth. This keeps the teeth from grinding together. For short term relief, use over-the-counter pain relievers or hot/cold compresses. In cases of severe TMD, surgery may be needed. There are a few tips and tricks to preventing TMD. Avoid chewing gum or on other objects like pens. Cut back on caffeine and alcohol. When eating, try to chew your food evenly on both sides of the mouth.

TMJ/TMD Soft Food Diet

TMJ_D.jpg

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects our jaw to our skull. When the joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to pain in this area, known as a temporomandibular joint disorder. Though there is no known cause for TMJ, it’s said to be caused by misalignment of the teeth, constant gum chewing, and teeth grinding. Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts can develop a treatment plan to alleviate this condition, but you can start doing so by incorporating softer foods into your diet.

Soft food gives your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal. Some excellent (and healthy) foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. If you must eat food that requires a heavy amount of chewing, we recommended chopping it up into small pieces. If you have a sweet tooth, soft cakes, cobblers, and cheesecake are good things to choose from.

What is TMD?

TMD_Asian_Girl_w_pain_on_side_of_face.jpg

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones in your skull, in front of each ear.  A general term for any problem or issue with this joint is temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.  Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts can help patients prevent and recover from negative effects of TMD.

Patients that grind or clench their teeth often end up with a sore jaw.  Other patients experience injuries with facial trauma that cause jaw pain, or result in the patient feeling their jaw gets stuck or ‘locks’ in either an open or closed position.  A custom night guard keeps the jaw in a neutral position during sleep, and this helps many patients find relief from TMD symptoms.  For any pain, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or warm and cold compresses.  To prevent further discomfort, you may be assigned stretches for your jaw.

Whatever your symptoms, you don’t have to suffer with discomfort in your jaw.  To learn more about TMD and the services we provide at the practice, visit www.elitedentalarts.com for more information. TMJ/TMD – Temporomandibular Joint Disorder

TMJ_D.jpgTo put it simply, the temporomandibular joint is the jaw joint. Each of us has two temporomandibular joints located on each side of the head, which work together as a pair. These joints are what allow us to eat, chew, and speak properly, but sometimes, it can cause discomfort. Because these joints are overworked on a daily basis, pain can develop, and may even restrict movement. If you experience any of the following symptoms, speak with Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts about TMJ disorder.

If you experience an ache in the jaw that is affecting the way you eat or speak, this may be due to a temporomandibular joint disorder. Grinding the teeth and constant gum chewing may make the pain worse. If you develop frequent headaches, a locked jaw, or notice a clicking or popping sound when you open and close your mouth, seek a diagnosis of TMJ. Once Dr. Nick Mobilia has evaluated your symptoms, he can suggest a solution that is right for you.
