Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Wisdom teeth extractions are the removal of any teeth from the third sets of molars. There are four wisdom teeth and depending on the patient and doctor’s discretion, not all four may necessarily be removed.

When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it means the tooth is coming in at an angle and not straight through the gum line. This can cause pain, overcrowding, or the tooth may only emerge partially. Impacted wisdom teeth can also become traps for infections. Removal is a quick operation that can take as few as 45 minutes. During the removal, patients are either numbed or given general anesthetic for sedation.

Post surgery patients will be on a soft food diet for a few days while the gums heal and swelling goes down. Foods such as ice cream, yogurt, thin soup, mashed potatoes, and pudding are recommended.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt between the ages of 17-22. When wisdom teeth do not emerge, this means that they are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth may be embedded underneath the gum or are partially-erupting but can’t move any further due to the obstruction of surrounding teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth do not always show symptoms, but they can increase a patient’s risk of developing an infection. If your wisdom teeth are problematic, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts may suggest extraction.

Impacted wisdom teeth may show symptoms of jaw pain, swelling around the gums or the jaw, bleeding gums, bad breath, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Types of Teeth

Teeth serve specialized functions and are vulnerable to specific problems. In order for patients to make the best oral health decisions, they should have a sense of what kind of mouth is normal and healthy, which is why we of Elite Dental Arts are providing a guide to different kinds of teeth.

Teeth have crowns, which are the part visible above the gum line, and roots. Crowns come in different shapes and teeth have different numbers of roots based on how strong they need to be. The teeth in front of the mouth only have one root each. They include, per jaw, two pairs of incisors and one pair of canines, also known as cuspids. The incisors are flat and crucial for forming speech. The canines are pointy and used for piercing. These teeth receive the most cosmetic care.

The premolars, of which adults grow two pairs per jaw, also have one root each. They have wide crowns with multiple cusps and are used for chewing. Molars, of which there are three pairs, including the wisdom teeth, are even wider and more creviced. Lower molars have two roots to anchor them securely in the jaw. Upper molars have three roots. Without extractions, adults typically have thirty-two teeth in total.

Why are Wisdom Teeth Removed?

Everyone has a set of wisdom teeth, but this set of ‘final molars’ often stays impacted.  Some patients experience these teeth beginning to erupt, usually between the ages of 17 and 24.  Even when that happens, there is not enough space in the mouth for these wisdom teeth to grow, which is why Dr. Nick Mobilia, DDS of Elite Dental Arts typically recommends extraction. 

Keeping wisdom teeth too long can cause oral discomfort, headaches, damage the surrounding teeth and put a patient at risk for infection. If you experience swollen or tender gums around the wisdom teeth, jaw pain, or facial swelling, give us a call. Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure to remove one or more wisdom teeth – the four permanent adult teeth located at the back corners of your mouth on the top and bottom. If a wisdom tooth doesn’t have room to grow (impacted tooth), this will result in pain, infection, or other dental problems and you will likely need to have it pulled. Depending on their preference, doctors at Elite Dental Arts will administer one of three types of anesthesia, depending on the expected complexity of the wisdom tooth extraction and your comfort level.

The gum tissue around the wisdom tooth is cut open to reveal the tooth. The tooth is loosened by gripping it tightly and wiggling it back and forth until it can be lifted out of the gums. Sometimes a tooth may be impacted so tightly that it cannot be simply lifted out of the gums. In cases like this the tooth will be broken up into pieces first before being removed. Depending on the incision and extraction site, sutures may be needed to close the area. Soluble sutures are the best option, which will dissolve on their own.
