Teeth Types

Have you ever wondered why we have teeth? It’s because if we didn’t, we wouldn’t be able to provide our bodies with the nourishment they need to survive. We also wouldn’t be able to speak properly or have a radiant smile. At Elite Dental Arts, it is our job to take care of all your teeth, but if you’ve ever wondered why your teeth look the way that they do, that’s because they each serve a different purpose in your mouth.

The types of teeth we have and their functions are listed below:

  • Incisors – located at the front of the mouth, these teeth have a sharp biting surface and are used for cutting or shearing food into small chewable pieces.
  • Canines – located at the ‘corners’ of the dental arches, these teeth have a sharp pointed biting surface. Their function is to grip and tear food.

  • Premolars – Unlike incisors and canines, these teeth have a flat biting surface. Their function is to tear and crush food.

  • Molars – The molars are the largest teeth in the mouth and they too have a large flat biting surface. The function of these is perhaps the strongest of all as they chew, crush, and grind food.

Tips for a Radiant Smile

Keeping our teeth their whitest is difficult. With all of the food and beverages that we consume that have the ability to stain our teeth, even proper maintenance call dull their shine. Fortunately, at Elite Dental Arts, we offer ZOOM! Whitening services to provide you with a brighter smile. However, if there is any reason you can’t go the cosmetic route at this moment, we can provide you with these tips that will give you a photogenic smile.

  • Be natural – when it’s picture time, smile gently. That way, your face looks relaxed. Your mouth opens slightly, and your lower lip matches the curve of your upper teeth.

  • Check your teeth and gums – getting your smile camera-ready sometimes calls for a little behind the scenes prep work. If your pearly whites have yellowed with age, try an over-the-counter whitening product or pay us a visit! Also, don’t forget about taking care of your gums. They play a critical role in your nice smile. So keep them in good shape by brushing, flossing, and rinsing with a mouthwash every day.

  • Practice – your perfect smile may not happen overnight, but if you have a big photo event like a wedding or a graduation coming up, it doesn’t hurt to try out your grin in front of the mirror!

Avoiding Staining to Keep a White Smile

Look your best this spring by keeping those pearly whites bright! At Elite Dental Arts in New York, NY, Dr. Nick Mobilia, DDS offers professional whitening. Take some tips for keeping your smile white after your whitening procedure!

The most important part of keeping a white smile is keeping it clean. A great at-home oral hygiene routine is important to keep away stain-causing debris, as well as routine professional cleanings. Sticky plaque that develops on our teeth just hours after brushing them can hold stain-causers close to teeth. Brush two to three times per day and floss once per day to keep away plaque and debris!

After drinking dark liquids or eating dark foods, like cola and soy sauce, make sure to rinse your mouth out. Brushing too soon after eating or drinking anything but water could harm your enamel, but rinsing with water will not. After thirty minutes, it is then safe to brush. In addition to rinsing afterward, drink your dark liquids through a straw to minimize contact. Avoiding tobacco use will also help keep stains away.
