Placing Dental Implants

Dental_Implant_Diagram.jpg

Dental implants are a safe and efficient way to replace missing teeth. A dental implant is a titanium post that resembles a tooth root and is surgically positioned into the jawbone beneath the gum line. Once this is done, Dr. Nick Mobilia, DDS of Elite Dental Arts can mount replacement teeth or a dental bridge into that area. If you are considering implants, you will need to schedule a consultation first, because, in order to move forward with the process, you must have adequate bone and healthy gums to support the implant.

Most dental implants are placed using a two-step process. Before performing the procedure, Dr. Mobilia will discuss sedation options in full. To place the implants, he will make an incision into the gum to expose the bone. He will then drill a hole into the bone, and place the implant into this hole. We understand that this may sound invasive, but you are much better off replacing missing teeth than living without them. Dental implants not only restore your smile, they restore your confidence as well.

Dangers of Frequent Snoring

Snoring_girl.jpg

Some people may snore after a long, exhausting day of strenuous activities, while others may snore due to an underlying medical condition. Snoring occurs because the air flow in the mouth is physically obstructed. Obstruction can be caused by several reasons, such as poor muscle tone in the throat and tongue, obstructed nasal airways from a deviated septum, or bulky throat tissue due to obesity. Regardless of what’s causing you or your partner to snore, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts has a solution.

People who snore on a frequent basis run several health risks, including sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is dangerous for many reasons because sleep apnea causes a person to pause and stop breathing during sleep. Sleep apnea increases a person’s risk of a heart attack and is also the leading cause of automobile accidents, due to falling asleep at the wheel. If you experience symptoms of constant fatigue, falling asleep during normal waking hours, or if your partner is pestering you, discuss your treatment options, today.

Sleep Apnea and Diabetes

Elite Dental Arts in Midtown provides patients with treatments for a wide variety of conditions, including obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). This disorder is extremely disruptive to a patient’s mental health and overall functioning and it particularly impacts people with diabetes.

OSA is the result of a person’s throat tissues sagging into their airways. This causes the person to wake up or be taken out of deep sleep several times in a night. People who are overweight are at greater risk for OSA. Metabolic disorders such as diabetes make people more likely to be overweight, but there is some evidence that OSA worsens diabetes symptoms, too. When sleep is disrupted, the liver produces more glucose, which can cause blood sugar to spike.

Where does the dentist come in? At Elite Dental Arts, we provide oral appliances that help keep the wearer’s jaw in place at night. This reduces the likelihood of their soft tissues obstructing their airways, sparing them the effects of sleep apnea. It also prevents them from grinding their teeth at night, which eliminates a source of stress which further disrupts their sleep.

Winter Lip Care

It’s been some bitterly cold few weeks for much of the country and there’s more still to come, which is why we at Elite Dental Arts in Midtown want to ensure our patients are taking care of their lips and other soft oral tissues. Cold air has a low moisture content, which is why chapping is more common and conditions such as dry mouth are worse during the winter.

Lip balm is useful for locking in moisture and dentists recommend that people apply it several times a day, including before they go to sleep. However, some ingredients in lip balm, most notably menthol and fragrances, cause some people to experience irritation. If your lips get red and swollen, check your lip balm’s label and switch to a different product.

While indoors, keep humidifiers in the bedroom and workspaces. Do not attempt to keep the lips moist by licking them or taking long showers—evaporation actually causes them to dry out faster. It also irritates the lips to hold them under the teeth, and doing so frequently can disrupt the teeth’s position. For dry mouth, there are throat moisturizers available, and if it is being caused by a breathing issue, our oral appliances may be able to help.

Dental Bonding

Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts uses dental bonding to repair and restore teeth that have been chipped, fractured, or damaged by decay. Bonding is one of the easiest and least expensive cosmetic procedures that involve applying a tooth-colored composite resin around the area that’s been affected. The procedure for dental bonding is short and sweet and can be completed in one visit.

Little to no preparation is needed for dental bonding to be applied. Anesthesia isn’t necessary and the process takes as little as 30 minutes (per tooth) to complete. First, Dr. Mobilia will use a shade guide to select a composite resin color that matches your natural teeth. The tooth will then be covered with a liquid that helps the resin attach to the tooth. The tooth-colored putty is then applied, molded, and smoothed to the desired shape.
