Gingivitis

Gingivitis is a common and mild form of gum disease (periodontal disease) that causes irritation, redness, and swelling (inflammation) of your gums. Because gingivitis can be mild, you may not be aware that you have the condition. However, it’s important to take gingivitis seriously and treat it promptly. Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts is here to help by providing you with routine dental cleanings.

Gingivitis commonly occurs because of films of bacteria that accumulate on the teeth (plaque). Gingivitis is a non-destructive type of periodontal disease, which means that it can be prevented. Generally, gingivitis resolves with good oral hygiene – longer and more frequent brushing, as well as flossing. If the condition is left untreated, gum disease can spread and affect tissue, teeth, and bones, leading to periodontitis which can eventually lead to tooth loss.

Diagnosing Bruxism

Some people grind their teeth only during sleep. This is called “nocturnal bruxism” or “sleep-related bruxism.” Others grind or clench their teeth during the daytime as well. Grinding of your teeth, also known as bruxism can have a variety of causes. Some experts view bruxism as nothing more than a habit. It can also be a result of the body’s reaction when the teeth do not line up or come together properly. If you experience signs and symptoms of bruxism, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts can provide you with an individualized treatment plan.

When diagnosing bruxism, Dr. Mobilia will ask about your general dental health, what sources of stress you have in your life, and what medicines you take. He will examine you, paying special attention to the muscles in and around your jaw. He will also look at your teeth for evidence of grinding. During this examination, Dr. Mobilia will check for tenderness in your jaw muscles and the jaw joint. A more detailed exam may follow if your dentist suspects that your bruxism is related to dental problems.

Nutrition and Your Oral Health

We all know how important it is to eat a proper well-balanced diet, but we may not realize that a poor diet can lead to gum disease and tooth decay.  Foods high in carbohydrates, sugars, and starches greatly contribute to the production of plaque acids that attack tooth enamel. Eventually, these acids can cause tooth enamel to break down, forming a cavity. At Elite Dental Arts, Dr. Nick Mobilia has plenty of filling options for your cavities, but we’d rather you prevent tooth decay altogether by brushing and flossing regularly, in addition to scheduling regular dental checkups.

Unfortunately, most people choose foods like sweets and chips for snacks; foods that harm teeth by promoting tooth decay while at the same time offering no nutritional value. When choosing a snack, be sure to reach for nutritious foods such as cheese, raw vegetables, plain yogurt or a piece of fruit. Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, leafy greens, and almonds are foods that may benefit tooth health thanks to their high amounts of calcium and other nutrients they provide. Fruits and vegetables are also good choices for a healthy smile since they are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth.
