Nutrition and Your Oral Health

We all know how important it is to eat a proper well-balanced diet, but we may not realize that a poor diet can lead to gum disease and tooth decay.  Foods high in carbohydrates, sugars, and starches greatly contribute to the production of plaque acids that attack tooth enamel. Eventually, these acids can cause tooth enamel to break down, forming a cavity. At Elite Dental Arts, Dr. Nick Mobilia has plenty of filling options for your cavities, but we’d rather you prevent tooth decay altogether by brushing and flossing regularly, in addition to scheduling regular dental checkups.

Unfortunately, most people choose foods like sweets and chips for snacks; foods that harm teeth by promoting tooth decay while at the same time offering no nutritional value. When choosing a snack, be sure to reach for nutritious foods such as cheese, raw vegetables, plain yogurt or a piece of fruit. Cheese, milk, plain yogurt, leafy greens, and almonds are foods that may benefit tooth health thanks to their high amounts of calcium and other nutrients they provide. Fruits and vegetables are also good choices for a healthy smile since they are high in water and fiber, which balance the sugars they contain and help to clean the teeth.
