Foods to Eat and Avoid with Traditional Braces

Nutrition___Dental_Health.jpg

Nutrition is important during orthodontic treatment because eating the wrong foods could break brackets, loosen wires, and have you spending more time in the dental chair than necessary. Additionally, if you have a diet that is high in sugar content, the sweets will create an environment in the mouth that can cause long-term damage to your teeth. If you are beginning orthodontic treatment, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts may suggest making dietary changes to protect your investment.

If you decide to straighten your teeth with traditional braces, you’ll require a little more self-discipline when it comes to your diet. It’s important to eat soft foods, especially after your orthodontic appointments when the mouth may feel a little sore. During this time, try reaching for soup, ice cream, mashed potatoes, pancakes, or any food that doesn’t require a lot of chewing. To avoid breaking your appliance(s), you should avoid crunchy, sticky, and hard foods, such as gum, caramel, nuts, or popcorn. These foods can get stuck in the wires and make them difficult to clean.
