Tooth Sensitivity

Sensitive teeth have a variety of causes that are best discussed with Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts. Also known as dentin hypersensitivity, tooth sensitivity occurs when the roots of the tooth are exposed and the enamel that protects our teeth becomes thinner. If hot, cold, or very sweet and acidic beverages make your teeth and gums wince, it’s time to schedule a professional exam to get the situation under control.

Tooth sensitivity is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene habits. If you don’t brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day, you’re likely to end up with receded gums. On the other hand, if you have an adequate oral care routine, but brush too vigorously, this will also wear down enamel and make the teeth sensitive. The easiest form of treatment for sensitive teeth is prevention, but solutions such as desensitizing toothpaste, brushing softer, or using fluoride gel could alleviate tooth and gum pain caused by sensitivity.
