Causes of Gap Teeth

Veneers_before_and_after_2.jpgElite Dental Arts is a trusted provider of aesthetic dental care in Midtown. Dr. Nick Mobilia is a certified provider of Invisalign, the removable orthodontic appliances that move teeth comfortably without metal. These devices fix minor misalignments and gaps in the teeth, but what causes gaps (also known as diastema) to develop in the first place? That’s the subject of this week’s blog.

The most common place for diastema is between the upper front incisors (the infamous “gap-tooth”). If the gap is small, Invisalign may not even be necessary. Veneers can be used to slightly adjust the surfaces of the teeth. But the teeth may be kept apart by an overdeveloped labial frenum. This vertical strip of connective tissue anchors the upper lip to the inside of the mouth, and it can be surgically reduced in size.

While overdeveloped frenums are a problem, gap teeth are likelier to be caused by the same forces that cause overbites. Tongue thrusting can push the teeth outward and apart. This habit is sometimes the result of psychological stress, but it can also be an involuntary reflex due to an ear, nose, and throat issue. Coordination with a specialist would be necessary to fix this. Children are also at risk of developing overbites if they suck their thumbs past about the age of five.

TMJ/TMD Soft Food Diet

TMJ_D.jpg

The temporomandibular joint is the joint that connects our jaw to our skull. When the joint is injured or damaged, it can lead to pain in this area, known as a temporomandibular joint disorder. Though there is no known cause for TMJ, it’s said to be caused by misalignment of the teeth, constant gum chewing, and teeth grinding. Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts can develop a treatment plan to alleviate this condition, but you can start doing so by incorporating softer foods into your diet.

Soft food gives your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal. Some excellent (and healthy) foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, smoothies, soup, and yogurt. If you must eat food that requires a heavy amount of chewing, we recommended chopping it up into small pieces. If you have a sweet tooth, soft cakes, cobblers, and cheesecake are good things to choose from.

Scaling and Root Planing

Dental_Professional_of_Fairlawn.jpg

Gingivitis is the most common form of gum disease and is fortunately easy to treat.  However, when left untreated it progresses into periodontitis, which causes permanent damage. Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts performs scaling and root planing procedures to stop gum disease in its tracks, and protect patient’s smiles from the effects of periodontitis!

Scaling and root planing is a simple and non-invasive procedure done in the office.  It begins with scaling, the term for the dentist removing plaque and tartar from the surface of the tooth all the way down to the gums. Depending on the case, a dentist may recommend completing this process over two appointments, and a patient may request local anesthetic.  This is followed by root planing, which means minor contouring to the surface of the tooth near the root.  When gums have a clean, smooth surface to reattach to, new growth of tissue is encouraged and gums heal giving the patient a clean slate against gum disease.

Oral Appliances For Sleep Apnea

Snoring_girl.jpg

Patients suffering from sleep apnea should visit Dr. Nick Mobilia at Elite Dental Arts to see if a COAT device is the solution to your sleep woes.  The most common treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a CPAP, or continuous positive airway pressure machine.  These work by forcefully pumping oxygen into the patient’s mask and up the nose.   CPAP machines are effective, but some patients find the mask uncomfortable or overwhelming.  Continuous open airway therapy (COAT) devices work by aligning the jaw stabilizing the mouth to preserve the openness of the airway.  This helps get maximum oxygen flow without a machine.

We are happy to be able to provide our patients with custom oral appliances.  These devices vary in size and design, but each style is meant to stabilize the jaw and control the tongue to keep the airway open.  A consultation is the only way to find out which type of device is the best fit for you.  If you have questions or concerns regarding sleep disorders, please give us a call. To learn more about COAT devices and all the services we offer, visit www.elitedentalarts.com for more information.
