Avoid These Foods If You Have TMJ/TMD

Nutrition___Dental_Health.jpg

A temporomandibular joint disorder can be aggravated by the foods we eat. As we’ve previously mentioned, if you have this condition, it’s best to follow a soft-food diet to alleviate the pain associated with this condition. In addition to telling you what to eat when you have TMJ, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts is here to tell you what foods you should avoid.

The constant motion of your jaw can aggravate your joint pain when chewy foods are a staple of your diet. This is because your jaw works overtime when you consume chewy foods such as caramel, taffy, chewing gum and tougher cuts of meat and fish (lobster). Types of food to avoid include chewy snacks, fatty foods, and foods that are cut into large pieces. To summarize, any type of food that allows you to open your mouth wide or chew for long periods of time may aggravate your TMJ.

Tooth Sensitivity

Sensitive teeth have a variety of causes that are best discussed with Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts. Also known as dentin hypersensitivity, tooth sensitivity occurs when the roots of the tooth are exposed and the enamel that protects our teeth becomes thinner. If hot, cold, or very sweet and acidic beverages make your teeth and gums wince, it’s time to schedule a professional exam to get the situation under control.

Tooth sensitivity is primarily caused by poor oral hygiene habits. If you don’t brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day, you’re likely to end up with receded gums. On the other hand, if you have an adequate oral care routine, but brush too vigorously, this will also wear down enamel and make the teeth sensitive. The easiest form of treatment for sensitive teeth is prevention, but solutions such as desensitizing toothpaste, brushing softer, or using fluoride gel could alleviate tooth and gum pain caused by sensitivity.

What is TMD?

TMD_Asian_Girl_w_pain_on_side_of_face.jpg

The temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw bone (mandible) to the temporal bones in your skull, in front of each ear.  A general term for any problem or issue with this joint is temporomandibular disorder, or TMD.  Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts can help patients prevent and recover from negative effects of TMD.

Patients that grind or clench their teeth often end up with a sore jaw.  Other patients experience injuries with facial trauma that cause jaw pain, or result in the patient feeling their jaw gets stuck or ‘locks’ in either an open or closed position.  A custom night guard keeps the jaw in a neutral position during sleep, and this helps many patients find relief from TMD symptoms.  For any pain, your dentist may recommend an over-the-counter painkiller or warm and cold compresses.  To prevent further discomfort, you may be assigned stretches for your jaw.

Whatever your symptoms, you don’t have to suffer with discomfort in your jaw.  To learn more about TMD and the services we provide at the practice, visit www.elitedentalarts.com for more information. Laser Treatment for Gums

Beautiful_Lower_half_of_Face.png

Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts takes pride in offering the best technology available to patients, and has seen great results for the treatment of periodontal disease with laser tools. Patients experiencing every stage of gum disease can see improvement from laser treatment.  The laser is so effective in periodontal treatments because it can target unhealthy gum tissue and leave healthy tissue undisturbed. The precision that can be achieved with a laser results in less trauma to the mouth and less recovery time.

In the past, periodontal treatment was completed using more aggressive tools and often required stitches. With a laser, treating only the affected gum tissue and not damaging any healthy gums is more efficient and causes little to no bleeding, which means less swelling after the procedure.  Patients often find the laser procedure relatively painless, so less and sometimes no anesthetic is needed!  Please contact us to improve your oral health with a laser treatment for your gums.

Impacted Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom_Teeth1.jpg

Wisdom teeth are the final set of molars that erupt between the ages of 17-22. When wisdom teeth do not emerge, this means that they are impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth may be embedded underneath the gum or are partially-erupting but can’t move any further due to the obstruction of surrounding teeth. Impacted wisdom teeth do not always show symptoms, but they can increase a patient’s risk of developing an infection. If your wisdom teeth are problematic, Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts may suggest extraction.

Impacted wisdom teeth may show symptoms of jaw pain, swelling around the gums or the jaw, bleeding gums, bad breath, or an unpleasant taste in the mouth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause damage to other teeth because if they are crooked, they can cause a misaligned bite or tooth pain. If you haven’t had a routine dental visit, you may be oblivious to the status of your wisdom teeth. Schedule a consultation with Dr. Nick Mobilia so that he can keep a close eye on your wisdom teeth and determine the best course of action.

Importance of Regular Cleanings

Nice_Smile.jpg

It is recommended by the Academy of General Dentistry to have a dentist or hygienist perform a dental cleaning every six months.  Dr. Nick Mobilia of Elite Dental Arts encourages all his patients to maintain a great oral health routine at home, but it is still important to come into the office for regular professional cleanings.  However much you brush and floss, some harmful bacteria grow in your mouth that cause gum disease and can only be removed by a dental professional.

It’s important to see a professional regularly to locate and monitor areas in the mouth that may need special attention, and a dentist can tell you if you may be missing a spot or skipping an important step in your regular oral care routine.  During a teeth cleaning, a hygienist thoroughly clean the area above and below the gum line with scaling tools to rid them of plaque and tartar. After the surfaces of the teeth are cleaned, the hygienist flosses between every one of your teeth and may apply fluoride if recommended by the dentist.
